Umbria: 7-Day Itinerary
Discover Umbria on a 7-day road trip through medieval hill towns, peaceful lakeside villages, vineyards, olive groves and the spectacular Marmore Falls.
Day 1.
Perugia Airport → Perugia
Driving: approximately 20–30 min
Pick up your rental car at Perugia Airport and head towards the historic centre of Umbria’s capital.
Start at Piazza IV Novembre, where the Fontana Maggiore sits between the cathedral and Palazzo dei Priori. Wander along Corso Vannucci, explore the atmospheric passageways of the Rocca Paolina and leave time for the smaller streets around Via della Viola.
Park outside the restricted ZTL area and continue on foot. Finish with dinner in a local trattoria and your first taste of Umbrian pasta, olive oil or truffles.

Day 2.
Perugia → Lake Trasimeno → Perugia
Driving: approximately 1 hr 30–1 hr 45 total
Spend today by Lake Trasimeno, where the pace slows and the views open up across the water.
Begin in Castiglione del Lago. Walk through the old town and visit the fortress for wide lake views, then linger over lunch before following the northern shore towards Passignano sul Trasimeno.
Enjoy a gentle waterfront walk or a coffee beside the lake. If you would like an island boat trip, allow extra time and check the current ferry timetable before deciding how much to fit in.
Return to Perugia for another evening in the old centre.

Day 3.
Perugia → Gubbio → Assisi
Driving: approximately 1 hr 45–2 hr total
Head northeast to Gubbio, a medieval town of pale stone buildings and steep lanes beneath Mount Ingino.
Make your way to Piazza Grande, the broad terrace overlooking the town, and admire the imposing Palazzo dei Consoli. Spend the morning exploring the historic centre before a relaxed lunch in one of its small piazzas.
Continue to Assisi in the afternoon. Check in, wander around Piazza del Comune and enjoy the warm evening light across the valley. Save the basilica and a longer look around Assisi for tomorrow.
Stay: Assisi — two nights
Day 4.
Assisi → Spello → Assisi
Driving: approximately 40–50 min total
Begin the morning in Assisi. Visit the Basilica of Saint Francis, then take your time along the stone streets and smaller squares above the main visitor routes.
In the afternoon, make the short drive to Spello. Enter through its ancient gates, follow the lanes lined with flowerpots and pause at viewpoints across the olive-covered valley. This is a lovely place for a slow lunch or an early evening aperitivo.
Return to your accommodation in Assisi. You can also use Spello as your base for both nights if you prefer a smaller-town atmosphere.

Day 5.
Assisi → Bevagna → Montefalco → Spoleto
Driving: approximately 1 hr 15–1 hr 30 total
Travel south into the countryside for a day of medieval villages, vineyards and Umbrian flavours.
Start in Bevagna, where Piazza Silvestri, small artisan workshops and gentle riverside corners invite you to slow down. Continue to nearby Montefalco for wide valley views and lunch among the stone streets.
Montefalco is known for Sagrantino wine. If you book a tasting, arrange a driver or choose a tasting your designated driver can skip.
Continue to Spoleto in the afternoon. Wander down to Piazza del Duomo and enjoy dinner in the historic centre. Keep the village stops unhurried and save additional museum visits for a longer stay.

Day 6.
Spoleto → Marmore Falls → Narni
Driving: approximately 1 hr 15–1 hr 30 total
Leave time for a morning stroll in Spoleto before heading south to Marmore Falls.
The waterfall’s strongest flow follows a scheduled water release, so check the official opening and water-release timetable before setting off. Choose a walk suited to your energy level, wear shoes with grip and bring a light waterproof layer for the spray.
Continue to Narni in the late afternoon. Explore the lanes around Piazza dei Priori and enjoy the views over the Nera Valley. If the underground tour interests you, check availability and reserve ahead.

Day 7.
Narni → Todi → Perugia Airport
Driving: approximately 1 hr 30–1 hr 45 total via Todi
If your flight leaves later in the day, make a final stop in Todi on the way north.
Walk up to Piazza del Popolo, explore the surrounding medieval lanes and enjoy one last coffee with a countryside view. Keep the visit flexible so there is plenty of time for fuel, returning your rental car and airport check-in.
For an early departure, skip Todi and drive directly from Narni to Perugia Airport. Allow roughly 1 hr 15–1 hr 30 for that transfer, plus your rental company’s return requirements and your airline’s check-in allowance.
