01 · THE HILLTOP VILLAGE

Lose yourself in the old town

High above the Cilento coast, Castellabate’s historic centre is a maze of stone lanes, archways and small piazzas. Start around the Castello dell’Abate, then let the quieter side streets lead you through the village.

The Castello dell’Abate was founded in 1123 by Abbot Costabile as a refuge against raids from the sea. That defensive setting still explains the village: it sits around 300 metres above the coast, with lanes and stairways climbing between closely packed houses. Check current castle access before planning an interior visit.

Make Belvedere San Costabile your next pause: its outlook takes in the coastline between Punta Licosa and Punta Tresino. Then follow the lanes towards Piazza 10 Ottobre 1123, familiar to fans of Benvenuti al Sud, for a drink and time to enjoy the square. These three stops give a first wander a simple shape without filling every minute.

Hidden Italy tip: Pair the village with a morning or afternoon by the sea. The old town and Santa Maria are separate parts of Castellabate, so plan the transfer between them.

02 · SANTA MARIA DI CASTELLABATE

A slower kind of seaside day

Down on the coast, Santa Maria brings a different rhythm: a stroll along the waterfront, a coffee near the sea and time on the beach before a long lunch.

Look for the arches of Porto delle Gatte and the seafront around Torre Perrotti. These are lovely corners to explore on foot before settling into the day.

For a longer stretch of sand, head towards Pozzillo, between Santa Maria and San Marco. Choose your spot according to the conditions and the kind of beach day you want.

03 · SAN MARCO & PUNTA LICOSA

Follow the coast a little further

Make time for San Marco’s harbour, where the modern port sits beside traces of an ancient landing place. It is a natural next stop after Santa Maria and Pozzillo.

Beyond San Marco, Punta Licosa offers a wilder stretch of coast: woodland, rocky coves and views towards a small offshore island with a lighthouse.

Plan this as a walk with time to enjoy the setting. Public car access is restricted, and some coastal sections are private. Use the permitted paths and check current local access before setting off.

Hidden Italy tip: Take proper walking shoes and water. If swimming is part of your plan, choose a permitted spot suited to the sea conditions.

PLAN YOUR VISIT

Make time for both sides of Castellabate

One day, from the sea to the village

Morning by the sea: start in Santa Maria with coffee, the arches of Porto delle Gatte and the waterfront around Torre Perrotti. Choose a beach stop towards Pozzillo if the weather and sea conditions suit.

Late afternoon above the coast: transfer to the hilltop village for the castle area, Belvedere San Costabile and Piazza 10 Ottobre 1123. We suggest allowing two to three hours for a wander, viewpoints and a drink, with extra time for dinner. Arrange the return transfer before settling in for the evening.

Save San Marco’s harbour and a separately planned Punta Licosa outing for another day; fitting every part of Castellabate into one day leaves little time to enjoy them.

Where to stay & how long to spend

Santa Maria suits a stay centred on the beach, waterfront walks and meals near the sea. The hilltop old town suits stone lanes, views and evenings in the village, but means a transfer for beach days. San Marco is another coastal base to consider around the harbour; check the actual walking route to your preferred beach.

“Castellabate” can mean the wider municipality, so check the map pin, parking and luggage access before booking. We suggest two nights for the village and Santa Maria, or three if you want a separate day for San Marco and the Licosa area.

When to visit

June and September are our picks for a coastal break outside the busiest holiday period. July and August are livelier, with August particularly busy. For walking and village time, consider spring too; check seasonal opening arrangements before booking.

Getting here & getting around

A car gives you flexibility for exploring Cilento. If arriving by train, Agropoli-Castellabate station is in Agropoli: you still need an onward bus or taxi to your accommodation. Check current connections and return options, especially outside summer.

Plan separate arrival and parking arrangements for the coast and the hilltop village. Use designated parking outside the historic centre and follow local access signs instead of navigating directly into its narrow lanes. Ask your host whether unloading requires special arrangements. Slopes and steps make the exact route important if you need step-free access; confirm it directly with your accommodation.

What to look for on the menu

Anchovies are a useful starting point for discovering local cooking. Look for alici in tortiera, baked with breadcrumbs, or stuffed anchovies known as alici ’mbuttunate. Availability varies with the menu and catch, so ask what is being prepared that day.

Build it into a longer road trip

Castellabate already features in our 7-day Campania itinerary. Add an extra night here for a slower Cilento stop, or combine your stay with Agropoli and Paestum, both featured in our Campania travel guide. Continue to Acciaroli for another harbour village and time on the Cilento coast.
