Sacri Monti of Italy: A Guide to the 9 UNESCO Sites
Discover the sacred mountains of Piedmont and Lombardy: chapel paths, remarkable art and hilltop landscapes. Use this guide to choose a site, plan your visit and combine it with our regional itineraries.
1. Sacro Monte di Varallo
Piedmont · Piemonte
Suggested time: 2–3 hours
Above the town of Varallo, a network of chapels brings biblical scenes into a hilltop setting. Painted backgrounds and life-size figures turn the interiors into detailed tableaux: allow time to look closely rather than treating each chapel as a quick stop. The complex began in the late fifteenth century and became an influential model for later Sacri Monti.
This is our suggested starting point if sacred art is the main reason for your visit. Combine the complex with the historic centre of Varallo, already featured in our Piemonte hidden gems guide.
Check the official access notices before choosing your way up. At our October 2026 check, the operator was reporting a temporary cable-car closure. Confirm the current walking and road options, and allow for the descent if you arrive on foot.
2. Sacro Monte di Orta
Piedmont · Piemonte
Suggested time: 1½–2 hours
Set above Orta San Giulio, this Sacro Monte follows the life of Saint Francis of Assisi through twenty chapels. Woodland paths, sculpture and painted scenes make a rewarding contrast to the waterfront below, while openings in the trees reveal Lake Orta and Isola San Giulio.
The approach from the village is an uphill walk, with cobbles and steps. Parking nearer the complex is subject to local access rules; being able to reach a car park does not make the full chapel route step-free. Chapel and church opening times differ.
Orta is a natural addition to our 7-day Piemonte itinerary. On the Orta day, choose your priorities or add another night: the hilltop visit, village and island all deserve time.
3. Sacro Monte di Crea
Piedmont · Piemonte
Suggested time: 1½–2½ hours
Crea lies in Monferrato, where a wooded hill rises above vineyard country. Its devotional route developed around an older Marian sanctuary from 1589. The chapels lead visitors through religious scenes, with the Paradise Chapel a particular artistic highlight when accessible.
Choose Crea for a cultural walk during a stay in Monferrato. It belongs in a separate outing around this part of Piemonte, rather than as a brief stop between the northern lakes. Our Piemonte travel guide introduces the region’s wider mix of towns and countryside.
Drive to the designated parking area and continue on foot. The sanctuary square and the hillside chapel paths have different accessibility: expect inclines, steps and uneven surfaces on the longer walk. Check local notices for closed sections and chapel access.
4. Sacro Monte di Oropa
Piedmont · Piemonte
Suggested time: 2–3 hours including the sanctuary
Above Biella, Oropa combines a major Marian sanctuary with a separate hillside chapel route. The twelve principal chapels of the Sacro Monte tell episodes from the life of the Virgin Mary. Seeing the sanctuary courtyards alone is therefore a different visit from walking the devotional route.
Allow a relaxed half-day if you want both, with additional time for lunch or a longer mountain outing. This is a useful cultural stop for a stay around Biella; Ricetto di Candelo, featured in our Piemonte guide, can form another part of a longer visit to the area.
The sanctuary is reached by road, with public-transport connections from Biella; check current timetables. The chapel walk is on foot over sloping ground. Bring an extra layer and check conditions before visiting in colder months.
5. Sacro Monte di Ghiffa
Piedmont · Piemonte
Suggested time: 1–1½ hours for the main complex
On the Piedmont side of Lake Maggiore, Ghiffa offers a compact combination of a Trinity sanctuary, chapels and an arcaded Way of the Cross. The lake-facing setting is a strong part of the appeal, with woodland around the monumental area.
We suggest Ghiffa if you want to include a Sacro Monte during a lake holiday without planning a full day around a large chapel circuit. Leave more time if you also want to walk in the reserve. Combine it with the western shore of Lake Maggiore; our Piemonte guide gives the wider regional context.
There is road access to designated parking. Check opening times for the church and chapels separately from outdoor access. Some adapted paths are available, but ask the site about the exact route and current surfaces if you need step-free access.
6. Sacro Monte di Domodossola
Piedmont · Piemonte
Suggested time: 1½–2½ hours including the walk
Sacro Monte Calvario rises on Mattarella hill above Domodossola. Its devotional route began in 1656 and centres on the Passion of Christ. The chapels and sanctuary add a historical and spiritual layer to a visit to the Ossola valleys.
Combine the hill with Domodossola’s old town rather than rushing through on the way to a distant lake. The town can also serve as a starting point for a longer exploration of northern Piemonte, including places introduced in our regional hidden gems guide.
The traditional approach is a climb from the town, so allow time and energy for both directions. Ask the site for current parking and access arrangements if you prefer a shorter approach. Indoor access and religious services follow their own schedules.
7. Sacro Monte di Belmonte
Piedmont · Piemonte
Suggested time: 1½–2 hours from upper parking
Near Valperga in the Canavese area, Belmonte has thirteen chapels along a wooded circular route. The scenes focus on the Passion of Christ, while the hill also preserves traces of much earlier settlement. It offers a different setting from the lake-facing Sacri Monti farther east.
Consider Belmonte for a dedicated Canavese outing from a Turin-area stay. It is an optional extension to our Piemonte itinerary, which otherwise follows a different route through the region.
Road access reaches designated parking, with the historic area explored on foot. The longer approach from Valperga adds an uphill walk. A ramp serves the church, but the complete chapel circuit includes slopes, steps and mixed surfaces; check suitable access in advance.
8. Sacro Monte di Varese
Lombardy · Lombardia
Suggested time: 2–3 hours; longer with museums
Fourteen chapels line the Via Sacra as it climbs towards Santa Maria del Monte above Varese. The sanctuary completes the religious sequence. The roughly two-kilometre approach is part of the experience, with changing views and a village at the top.
Choose between walking the chapel route and travelling closer to the upper village: they are different visits. Check current bus and funicular services before relying on them for the return. The Baroffio Museum and Pogliaghi House-Museum need additional time and have separate opening arrangements.
This fits a Varese stay or an added day in western Lombardia. Use our Lombardia travel guide to plan the wider trip. Wear shoes with grip for the uphill cobbled route and allow enough daylight for your chosen descent.
9. Sacro Monte di Ossuccio
Lombardy · Lombardia
Suggested time: 2–3 hours including ascent and descent
Above Ossuccio in Tremezzina, fourteen chapels mark the climb to the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Soccorso. Lake Como and Isola Comacina come into view along this western-shore setting, where the ascent is as much a part of the visit as the destination.
Visitors normally park near the lower part of the route and continue on foot; ordinary car access does not extend to the sanctuary. Anyone needing adapted access should contact the sanctuary before travelling. The path has slopes, cobbles and steps.
Add this as an alternative outing during the Como part of our Lombardia itinerary, or explore our Top 5 lakes in Lombardia. If staying in Varenna or Bellano, allow for the journey to the opposite shore and return connections.
How to include the Sacri Monti in your trip
Choose one or two sites that fit the area where you are staying. These nine complexes are spread across two regions; the order above is a guide to the places, not a driving itinerary.
Our interactive Piemonte travel map includes all seven Sacri Monti in Piemonte, with practical visiting tips and nearby places to help you plan your trip.
Lake Orta and Lake Maggiore
Start with Orta during a Lake Orta stay, then visit Ghiffa on a separate outing along Lake Maggiore’s western shore. Varallo can be an additional Valsesia day. Our 7-day Piemonte itinerary already includes Orta and Stresa: extend the trip or exchange an activity to make space.
Lake Como and western Lombardy
Ossuccio fits a stay around Tremezzina on Lake Como. Varese works as a separate excursion in western Lombardy. Allow for lake traffic, ferry connections and the walks themselves when adapting our Lombardia itinerary.
Beyond the lakes
Combine Oropa with the Biella area, Belmonte with Canavese, Crea with Monferrato, or Domodossola with the Ossola valleys. These pairings help you keep a visit focused instead of spending most of the day travelling between distant sites.
Practical visiting tips
Time and terrain: Our suggested times are planning estimates for an unhurried introductory visit, excluding travel to the area. Longer approaches, guided tours and museums add time. Chapel paths often have cobbles, steps and slopes; an accessible sanctuary does not mean an accessible full circuit.
When to go: Spring and early autumn can suit the lower sites. Check weather and ground conditions at higher locations such as Oropa, especially in winter. Summer visits benefit from an early start, water and sun protection. Keep plans flexible around rain, snow and local closures.
Opening hours and costs: Outdoor paths, chapels, sanctuaries, museums, parking and transport can each have different arrangements. Use the official link in each location section before travelling. Do not assume that every chapel can be entered or that an open site means all interiors are visible.
Respect the setting: These remain places of worship. Keep noise low near services, follow photography notices and use designated picnic areas. Stay on marked paths and do not touch statues or painted surfaces.
Frequently asked questions
Are the Sacri Monti worth visiting if I am not religious?
Yes: the combination of sculpture, painting, architecture and landscape makes them rewarding cultural visits. Their religious purpose remains central to understanding what you see.
Are there only nine Sacri Monti in Italy?
Nine complexes belong to the UNESCO property covered here. Other sacred mountains and devotional sites exist; they are not automatically part of this inscription.
Is Sacra di San Michele one of the nine?
No. The abbey visited in our Piemonte itinerary is a different monument. It should not be confused with the nine Sacri Monti of the UNESCO property.
Can I visit without a car?
Several nearby towns are served by trains and buses, but the final connection or uphill approach varies by site. Plan the outward and return journey using current transport information; a railway station in the town is not necessarily close to the first chapel.
Which is best for a first visit?
Our suggestions are Orta for a Lake Orta holiday, Ossuccio for Lake Como, and Varallo if sacred art is your main interest. Choose according to your base, mobility and available time.
