Lombardia: 7‑Day Itinerary

Explore Milan, Lake Como, Bergamo, Lake Iseo and Lake Garda on a seven-day journey through Lombardia. This route combines celebrated sights with our regional hidden gems, including Bellano, Lovere and Monte Isola.

Day 1.

Milan

Milan Cathedral and Piazza del Duomo, the first stop on a 7-day Lombardia itinerary

Driving: No car needed within Milan

Begin with a full day in Milan. Explore Piazza del Duomo and the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, then choose a cathedral visit or the rooftop terraces. Book the appropriate ticket and leave enough time for security checks.

Continue through Brera for galleries, small streets and a leisurely lunch. Spend the afternoon around Castello Sforzesco and Parco Sempione, or choose one museum instead. Finish with dinner in Brera or along the Navigli.

This itinerary assumes seven full sightseeing days, with arrival and departure travel arranged separately. Use public transport in Milan and collect a rental car only when leaving the city. Ask your hotel about parking and check restricted traffic zones before driving.

Stay: Milan

Day 2.

Milan → Varenna → Bellano

Colourful waterfront houses and church tower in Varenna on Lake Como, Lombardia

Driving: Approximately 1½–2 hours to the eastern shore of Lake Como, plus local transfers

Leave Milan for Varenna on Lake Como. Settle into a base in Varenna or nearby Bellano for two nights, leaving your car in designated parking. Spend the afternoon walking the waterfront and the stepped lanes of Varenna.

Choose a garden visit at Villa Monastero if it is open, or keep the afternoon free for the lake. Continue to Bellano for a waterfront stroll and the Orrido gorge, checking current opening times and allowing for steps and wet surfaces.

Varenna and Bellano also have railway stations, so this part of the trip can be done by train. Our Top 5 Lakes in Lombardia explains how Lake Como compares with the region’s other lakes.

Stay: Varenna or Bellano

Day 3.

Lake Como: Varenna → Bellagio → Varenna

Bellagio waterfront and hillside villas seen from a boat on Lake Como, Lombardia

Driving: None needed; use passenger boats and local transport

Leave the car parked and take a passenger boat from Varenna to Bellagio. Explore the lanes above the harbour, enjoy the waterfront and, when open, visit the gardens of Villa Melzi. Allow time for queues and keep the day focused on the central lake.

Check official Lake Como boat timetables for your travel date. Services, stopping patterns and the last return sailing vary by season; not every boat carries vehicles.

Return to Varenna for an unhurried evening. Add Menaggio only if the timetable and your pace allow it. If wind or weather disrupts boats, spend the day around your own shore instead.

Stay: Varenna or Bellano

Day 4.

Lake Como → Bergamo → Iseo

Bergamo Città Alta skyline with historic buildings, church towers and the cathedral dome

Driving: Approximately 2½–3 hours total, excluding sightseeing and parking

Travel via Lecco towards Bergamo. Park outside the restricted historic centre and reach Città Alta by public transport, funicular or on foot. Give the upper town several hours rather than treating it as a quick photo stop.

Explore Piazza Vecchia, Piazza Duomo and the area around Santa Maria Maggiore and the Colleoni Chapel. Walk a section of the Venetian Walls for views across the lower town; the walls are part of a UNESCO-listed defensive system.

Continue to Iseo in the late afternoon and settle in for two nights. Enjoy the waterfront and dinner near the historic centre. This is the busiest transfer day of the week, so save any additional mountain-village detours for a longer trip.

Stay: Iseo or Sulzano

Day 5.

Lake Iseo: Monte Isola & Lovere

Lakeside houses and boats at Peschiera Maraglio on Monte Isola, Lake Iseo

Driving: Approximately 1–1½ hours locally, plus boat crossings

Start with Monte Isola, reached by passenger boat from Sulzano to Peschiera Maraglio. Visitors leave their cars on the mainland. Walk towards Sensole for lakeside scenery and fishing villages, then return at a comfortable pace.

The climb to the sanctuary above Cure is an optional, more demanding outing. If you choose it, give the island most of the day and leave Lovere for another visit. Check official boat timetables and current local rules before bringing a bicycle.

For a gentler island morning, continue afterwards to Lovere for its historic centre and lakefront. Return to your Iseo-area base in the evening. Both places feature in our regional hidden gems guide.

Stay: Iseo or Sulzano

Day 6.

Lake Iseo → Sirmione → Desenzano del Garda

Scaligero Castle beside the water in Sirmione on Lake Garda, Lombardia

Driving: Approximately 1½–2 hours total, depending on your base and traffic

Head east to Lake Garda and Sirmione. Park before the restricted old town and continue on foot. Explore the streets around Scaligero Castle, allowing for summer queues and a busy peninsula.

At the northern tip, the Grotte di Catullo are the remains of a large Roman villa, despite their name. Choose the archaeological site or a castle visit according to opening times and your interests, then leave time for the lakefront.

Continue to Desenzano del Garda for a practical final base, or stay in Sirmione if you prefer. Our Lombardia lakes guide focuses on the Lombard shores: Garda is also shared with Veneto and Trentino.

Stay: Desenzano del Garda or Sirmione

Day 7.

Desenzano or Sirmione → Salò → Gardone Riviera

Villa with arched balconies and pink bougainvillea in Gardone Riviera on Lake Garda

Driving: Approximately 1½–2½ hours return, depending on your base and lake traffic

Spend your final full day on Lake Garda’s western shore. Walk along Salò’s waterfront and explore the lanes behind it, then continue to Gardone Riviera for a garden or cultural visit.

The Vittoriale degli Italiani offers gardens, views and the former home of Gabriele d’Annunzio. Check current ticket options and reserve any timed interior visit. Keep the afternoon flexible for lunch and a final lakeside stroll.

Return to your base. This route ends at Lake Garda; a drive back to Milan or an airport transfer is additional travel. Allow separate time for car return and a flight, or use an extra night before an early departure.

For a longer stay, add Tremosine, Bagolino and Lake Idro as a separate extension. Mountain roads take time, and current access conditions should be checked.

Stay: Desenzano del Garda or Sirmione if extending

Plan your Lombardia trip

Allow seven full days, with one night in Milan, two by Lake Como, two by Lake Iseo and a final Lake Garda base. May–June and September often suit town visits and lake time; summer is busier, while winter brings shorter daylight and reduced boat or attraction schedules.

Driving times are planning estimates excluding visits, parking, queues and delays. A car is useful between bases, but boats and walking are easier for many lake visits. Public transport is possible with adjusted transfers and current timetables.
