Monte Isola
Fishing villages, olive trees and a mountain rising from Lake Iseo.
Arriving by boat is part of Monte Isola’s appeal. The waterfront villages invite an easy first wander, while the roads and paths above them reveal a much steeper island. Choose between a gentle lakeside day and a longer climb, then leave time for lunch with a view of the water.
01 · PESCHIERA MARAGLIO & SENSOLE
Follow the shore into the island’s working history
Peschiera Maraglio is a natural starting point, with its small harbour and lakeside places to eat. Fishing, wooden boatbuilding and net-making shaped Monte Isola; keep that history in mind as you walk between the waterfront and the narrow lanes behind it.
Continue towards Sensole along the stretch known for its olive trees and views of the little island of San Paolo. This makes a satisfying out-and-back walk without committing to a full circuit. San Paolo is privately owned, so enjoy it as part of the view.
Beyond Sensole, the route rises towards Menzino. The fortress above the village is a landmark to look for, but the shoreline section and the hill route should not be confused when choosing a walk.
Hidden Italy tip: For a relaxed first visit, make Sensole your turning point and save the interior for another day.
02 · MADONNA DELLA CERIOLA
Make the sanctuary a rewarding climb of its own
The white sanctuary of Madonna della Ceriola crowns the island, with a panorama that explains how Monte Isola sits within Lake Iseo. The approach passes through the upper village of Cure before the final uphill path.
Walking up from Peschiera Maraglio is a substantial climb rather than an extension of the flat waterfront. Use the current route information, wear suitable shoes and allow time to descend before your return boat.
Local buses can help with part of the ascent, depending on the timetable, but the final approach still needs to be considered separately. Ask about the exact walking section if gradients or uneven surfaces are a concern.
Hidden Italy tip: If the sanctuary is your priority, give it the middle of the day and keep the remaining stops modest. The full island circuit is a separate outing.
03 · VILLAGES, CYCLING & LOCAL FLAVOURS
Discover the island beyond its first landing
Siviano has narrow lanes and a historic tower, while Carzano brings you back to a village closely connected with the water. Visiting them shows how much the island changes between its shoreline and hillside settlements.
A bicycle can make a longer circuit practical, but the route includes climbs and shared roads. Visitors leave cars on the mainland; local transport and residents’ vehicles still use the island, so ride considerately.
At lunch, look for lake fish, local olive oil or salami associated with Cure. A meal gives the day a natural pause between villages instead of turning the circuit into a distance to complete.
Hidden Italy tip: Check current restrictions before bringing your own bicycle. Rules vary by date, and renting on the island may suit your plans better.
PLAN YOUR VISIT
Build your island day around the boat and your pace
A suggested day
Morning: take a boat to Peschiera Maraglio, explore the lanes and walk towards Sensole. Return for a leisurely lunch, with time to stop beside the lake.
Afternoon: enjoy more village time or take a planned local connection to another settlement. For a sanctuary day, replace the Sensole walk with the climb via Cure. These are our suggested combinations, not official timed itineraries.
Where to stay & how long to spend
A full day allows a satisfying first visit. Staying overnight lets you enjoy the island around the boat schedule rather than within it. Choose Peschiera Maraglio or Carzano for proximity to a landing; hillside accommodation may need a bus connection or an uphill walk with luggage. A mainland base around Sulzano suits travellers making several lake outings.
When to visit
Spring and early autumn are appealing for walking. Summer offers long days but can bring heat and busy crossings. Outside the main season, check both boats and restaurant opening days before setting out.
Arrival & getting around
Established crossings link Sulzano with Peschiera Maraglio and Sale Marasino with Carzano. Check the operator’s timetable for your date, the precise landing and your return. Leave the car in permitted mainland parking and allow time to reach the pier.
Check bicycle rules with the municipality or tourist office before travel; bringing a bike is restricted on certain days. For limited mobility, confirm the boat, landing and chosen island route separately.
A longer Lake Iseo stay
Combine the island with Lovere on a separate day if you want the sanctuary or a longer circuit. Our Lombardia itinerary and lake guide help place the visit within a wider trip.
Use Navigazione Lago d’Iseo for boats, the official island overview for landmarks and Monte Isola’s cycling information for routes and restrictions.
