Top 10 beaches in Calabria
Calabria is home to some of Italy’s most spectacular coastline, with crystal-clear water, dramatic cliffs and beaches that still feel wonderfully undiscovered. From famous stretches of the Costa degli Dei to secluded coves along the Ionian coast, these are 10 of the best beaches in Calabria to add to your trip.
10. Punta Fiuzzi
In northern Calabria, Punta Fiuzzi offers one of the most dramatic views on the Riviera dei Cedri. The beach looks directly towards Isola di Dino, whose limestone coastline is filled with sea caves that can be explored from the water.
Why visit: Beautiful mountain-and-sea scenery and views towards Isola di Dino.
Hidden Italy tip: Rent a kayak and explore the caves around the island rather than spending the entire day on the beach.
9. Soverato Beach
Soverato is a good choice if you prefer a beautiful beach with more facilities nearby. Its long coastline combines clear Ionian water with sandy beaches, beach clubs and a lively seafront. The area is also known for its protected marine environment and seahorses.
Why visit: Beautiful water combined with restaurants, facilities and an atmospheric seaside town.
Hidden Italy tip: Make this one of your stops when road-tripping along Calabria’s Ionian coast.
8. Le Cannella Beach
Le Cannella stands out because of its distinctive reddish-golden sand, which contrasts beautifully with the blue Ionian Sea. It forms part of the coastline around the Capo Rizzuto Marine Protected Area, one of Calabria’s most interesting areas for marine landscapes.
Why visit: Unusual coloured sand and a beautiful natural setting.
Hidden Italy tip: Don't just visit Le Cannella. The coastline around Capo Rizzuto has several beaches worth exploring.
7. Caminia Beach
Crossing over to Calabria’s Ionian coast, Caminia offers a completely different landscape. The beach sits in the Gulf of Squillace beneath steep cliffs, with pale sand and pebbles meeting beautifully transparent water.
Why visit: Dramatic cliffs and clear Ionian water without the scenery of the more famous Tyrrhenian coast.
Hidden Italy tip: Combine Caminia with nearby Copanello for a full day exploring this stretch of coastline.
6. Praia i Focu
For something wilder, head to Praia i Focu. Surrounded by cliffs beneath Capo Vaticano, this small beach is considerably harder to reach than nearby Grotticelle and is best accessed from the sea. Its secluded location and remarkably clear water make it one of the area's most impressive coves.
Why visit: A wild little cove surrounded by spectacular cliffs.
Hidden Italy tip: Combine it with Grotticelle and explore the coastline by boat or kayak.
5. Marina dell'Isola
No list of Calabria’s best beaches would be complete without Tropea. Marina dell'Isola lies beneath the town’s dramatic cliffs and the famous Sanctuary of Santa Maria dell'Isola, creating one of the most recognisable coastal scenes in southern Italy. From here you can also reach the Palombaro Cave.
Why visit: The ultimate combination of beach, historic town and spectacular scenery.
Hidden Italy tip: Stay until the evening and walk back into Tropea for sunset and dinner.
4. Paradiso del Sub
The name translates to “Diver’s Paradise”, which already gives you an idea of what makes this beach special. Paradiso del Sub combines clear turquoise water with rocks, vegetation and small stretches of pale sand. A short path leads down towards this beautiful corner of the Costa degli Dei.
Why visit: Fantastic clear water and excellent snorkelling.
Hidden Italy tip: Bring a mask and snorkel. Much of the beauty here is beneath the surface.
3. Grotticelle Beach
Grotticelle is formed by a series of picturesque bays beneath the dramatic Capo Vaticano headland. White sand, granite rocks and exceptionally clear turquoise water have made it one of Calabria’s most iconic coastal destinations.
Why visit: Some of the clearest and most colourful water in Calabria.
Hidden Italy tip: Rent a kayak or small boat to discover the coves and cliffs around Capo Vaticano from the water.
2. Spiaggia di Michelino
Just outside famous Tropea, Michelino feels surprisingly secluded. A long staircase leads down towards a beautiful stretch of golden sand, rocks and intensely blue water, with views along the Costa degli Dei. The clear seabed also makes this an excellent place for swimming and snorkelling.
Why visit: Tropea-like scenery with a more natural setting.
Hidden Italy tip: The stairs are part of the experience, but remember that you'll have to climb them again on the way back.
1. Spiaggia dell'Arcomagno
Hidden behind an enormous natural rock arch, Spiaggia dell'Arcomagno is one of Calabria’s most extraordinary beaches. The tiny sand-and-pebble cove is surrounded by towering rock formations and crystal-clear water, creating an almost enclosed natural pool.
Why visit: One of the most unique coastal landscapes in Calabria.
Hidden Italy tip: Come early or outside the busiest summer weeks to experience this tiny cove at its best.
