Calabria: 7-day Itinerary
Discover Calabria on a 7-day road trip through dramatic coastlines, historic villages, turquoise beaches, wild landscapes, and authentic towns beyond the tourist trail.
Day 1.
Lamezia Terme → Pizzo → Tropea
Driving: ± 1 hr 30 total
Pick up your rental car at Lamezia Terme Airport and head straight towards the Tyrrhenian coast. Make your first stop in Pizzo, a beautiful seaside town known for its historic centre, Castello Murat and famous tartufo di Pizzo.
Continue south to Tropea, where you’ll spend your first night. Explore the historic centre in the late afternoon before watching the sunset over the Tyrrhenian Sea.
Stay: Tropea
Day 2.
Tropea & Capo Vaticano
Driving: ± 45 min total
Spend the morning exploring Tropea and its spectacular coastline before driving south towards Capo Vaticano.
Stop at beaches such as Grotticelle or the more secluded Praia i Focu, and visit the Capo Vaticano viewpoint. This section of the Costa degli Dei is particularly known for its cliffs, coves and clear water.
Stay: Tropea
Day 3.
Tropea → Scilla
Driving: ± 1 hr 30
Leave Tropea and follow the coast south towards Scilla.
Spend the afternoon wandering through Chianalea, the old fishing quarter where houses stand directly beside the water. Visit Castello Ruffo and stay for sunset overlooking the Strait of Messina.
This is deliberately a relatively relaxed day, so the itinerary doesn't become seven days of constantly packing and driving.
Stay: Scilla
Day 4.
Scilla → Reggio Calabria
Driving: ± 30–40 min
Continue along the Costa Viola to Reggio Calabria.
Walk along the Lungomare, explore the historic centre and visit the National Archaeological Museum to see the famous Riace Bronzes.
You could stay in Reggio, but I'd actually make this a transitional day before heading towards Calabria's much less visited Ionian side.
Stay: Reggio Calabria
Day 5.
Reggio Calabria → Gerace
Driving: ± 1 hr 45–2 hr
This is where the road trip starts to feel much more Hidden Italy.
Cross towards Calabria's Ionian coast and continue north to Gerace, one of the region's most beautiful medieval villages. Explore its narrow streets, viewpoints and enormous Norman cathedral.
The Ionian route is particularly interesting because medieval hill towns such as Gerace and Stilo sit just inland from the coastline.
Stay: Gerace / Locri
Day 6.
Gerace → Stilo → Soverato
Driving: ± 1 hr 45 total
Drive north along the Ionian coast before heading inland to Stilo.
Visit the village and its famous Byzantine Cattolica di Stilo, then continue towards Soverato.
Spend the late afternoon on the beach or walk along Soverato's seafront. The town sits on the Costa degli Aranci and combines clear Ionian water with a lively waterfront.
Stay: Soverato
Day 7.
Soverato → Caminia → Lamezia Terme
Driving: ± 1 hr 30–2 hr
Don't drive directly back to the airport.
Follow the coast north and stop at Caminia Beach, one of the prettiest coves on this part of Calabria's Ionian coastline. You could also make a short stop around Copanello before crossing back towards Lamezia Terme. Caminia and Copanello are both highlighted along this stretch of the Costa degli Aranci.
Return your rental car at Lamezia Terme Airport and fly home.
