Day 1.
Rome Airport → Calcata Vecchia → Viterbo
Driving: ± 1 hr 45 total
Pick up your rental car at Rome Fiumicino Airport and leave the capital behind for the quieter landscapes of northern Lazio.
Make your first stop in Calcata Vecchia, a tiny medieval village perched dramatically above the forested Treja Valley. Wander through its narrow stone streets, hidden courtyards and small artisan workshops before continuing north.
Arrive in Viterbo in the late afternoon and explore its beautifully preserved medieval centre, especially the atmospheric San Pellegrino district.

Day 2.
Viterbo → Vitorchiano → Civita di Bagnoregio → Bolsena
Driving: ± 1 hr 30 total
Start the morning in Vitorchiano, one of Lazio’s most striking medieval villages, built dramatically on a volcanic rock plateau.
Continue north towards Civita di Bagnoregio. Cross the long pedestrian bridge into the tiny hilltop village and explore its stone lanes, ancient archways and spectacular viewpoints across the surrounding valleys.
Finish the day beside Lake Bolsena. Walk through Bolsena’s medieval centre, climb towards Rocca Monaldeschi and enjoy the evening along the lakeshore.

Day 3.
Bolsena → Caprarola → Lake Bracciano
Driving: ± 1 hr 45 total
Leave Lake Bolsena and drive south through the countryside towards Caprarola.
Visit the impressive Palazzo Farnese, known for its unusual pentagonal design, grand staircase, frescoed rooms and Renaissance gardens.
Continue towards Lake Bracciano in the afternoon. Explore one of the lakeside towns, walk along the waterfront and enjoy a slower evening beside the volcanic lake.

Day 4.
Lake Bracciano → Subiaco → Isola del Liri
Driving: ± 2 hr 45–3 hr total
This is the most mountainous day of the road trip.
Drive east towards Subiaco, surrounded by the forests and valleys of the Simbruini Mountains. Visit the extraordinary Monastery of San Benedetto, built dramatically into the rocky mountainside, and explore the historic centre.
Continue south towards Isola del Liri, one of Lazio’s most unusual towns. Here, the Cascata Grande waterfall drops directly through the historic centre beneath the old castle.
Spend the evening walking along the riverside streets.

Day 5.
Isola del Liri → Sperlonga → Gaeta
Driving: ± 1 hr 45 total
Head towards Lazio’s Tyrrhenian Coast and spend the morning in Sperlonga.
Explore the maze of whitewashed streets in its hilltop historic centre before walking down towards the beach. You can also visit the nearby archaeological site of the Villa of Tiberius and its coastal grotto.
Continue south towards Gaeta in the afternoon. Explore its historic centre, waterfront and dramatic coastline around Monte Orlando.

Day 6.
Gaeta → San Felice Circeo → Sabaudia
Driving: ± 1 hr 30 total
Follow the coast north towards the landscapes of Circeo National Park.
Stop in San Felice Circeo, where a historic hilltop village overlooks the Tyrrhenian Sea. Wander through its old streets and viewpoints before heading towards the coast.
Continue to Sabaudia, known for its long sandy beach, dunes and beautiful setting between the sea and Lago di Sabaudia.
Spend the late afternoon relaxing on the beach or exploring the surrounding natural landscape.
Stay: Sabaudia / San Felice Circeo
Day 7.
Sabaudia → Giardino di Ninfa → Rome Airport
Driving: ± 1 hr 45–2 hr to Rome Airport
Don’t drive directly back to the airport.
Make a final stop at the Giardino di Ninfa, where medieval ruins, streams, stone bridges and lush gardens create one of Lazio’s most atmospheric landscapes.
Walk through the gardens before continuing towards Rome Fiumicino Airport, returning your rental car and flying home.
