Top 5 Beaches in Basilicata
Basilicata meets two seas: broad sandy shores on the Ionian coast and rocky coves around Maratea on the Tyrrhenian. These five favourites offer contrasting beach days, with practical access tips and links to our 5-day Basilicata itinerary.
5. Lido di Metaponto
A broad sandy shoreline makes Lido di Metaponto a rewarding stop on Basilicata’s Ionian coast. The beach resort is separate from the archaeological sites of ancient Metapontum, so allow time to move between them. Combine a morning among Greek remains with a relaxed afternoon beside the sea.
Why visit: An easy pairing of sandy beach time and the heritage of Magna Graecia.
Hidden Italy tip: Follow day two of our itinerary for Matera and Metaponto. Use designated beach parking and check which lidos and services are open outside summer.
4. Lido San Basilio, Marina di Pisticci
Lido San Basilio is one of the established beach areas of Marina di Pisticci. This Ionian stretch offers a wide sandy shore, shallow nearshore water and seasonal beach facilities. The coast is distinct from Pisticci’s hilltop historic centre, making it worth planning your visit to each separately.
Why visit: A spacious sandy setting with beach services and the coastal landscapes of Marina di Pisticci.
Hidden Italy tip: Use marked beach access routes and keep off the dunes and protected vegetation. Shallow water does not guarantee calm conditions: follow flags and local advice. Find more inland stops in our Basilicata travel guide.
3. Fiumicello, Maratea
Fiumicello brings together a scenic bay, grey sand and pebbly sections close to the services of its coastal neighbourhood. One of Maratea’s more convenient beaches, it has equipped lidos and nearby parking. It suits travellers who want time by the Tyrrhenian without a long descent to a remote cove.
Why visit: A practical beach base with nearby facilities and a dramatic Maratea coastal setting.
Hidden Italy tip: Arrive early in high season and check parking charges on arrival. Maratea’s historic centre is uphill and separate from Fiumicello; our final itinerary day leaves time for both.
2. Anginarra, Acquafredda
At Acquafredda, north of Maratea’s main centre, Anginarra sits beneath high cliffs beside neighbouring Luppa. Its mix of sand, gravel and dark pebbles gives it a different character from the long Ionian beaches. Nearby parking and seasonal sunbed hire make this a useful choice for a coastal day out.
Why visit: Cliff-backed scenery and a contrasting shore in the northern part of Maratea’s coastline.
Hidden Italy tip: Bring water shoes if you find pebbles uncomfortable and use signed access points. Allow time for the winding coastal road; choose this as an alternative beach on day five, rather than rushing between several coves.
1. Cala Jannita (Spiaggia Nera), Maratea
Known as Spiaggia Nera, Cala Jannita is framed by rocks and Mediterranean vegetation near Marina di Maratea. Dark sand mixed with tiny pebbles creates its distinctive colour. Seasonal beach establishments provide facilities, while the approach follows a path through greenery and steps down to the shore.
Why visit: A striking dark beach and one of Maratea’s most distinctive coastal settings.
Hidden Italy tip: Wear suitable shoes for the approach and allow for the climb back. This is not a step-free beach. Pair it with our Maratea beach day, and check sea conditions before swimming.

June and September often suit a coastal trip; July and August bring more heat and visitors. Beach clubs, sunbed hire and parking may involve charges and operate seasonally. Check local signs, sea conditions and any access restrictions before visiting. Allow a separate transfer when changing between the Ionian and Tyrrhenian coasts.
